I decided that I needed a little speed work before PMBAR next week, so I talked Alex into racing the SERC race out at Yargo State Park this weekend. As usual, tweedle dee and tweedle dumb came along for the ride and had a good time taking pics in the backseat and at the playground while we raced. Matt Harris showed up as well.
This was a qualifying event for nationals, so the turnout was pretty good. I somehow got it in my head to race the CAT 1 race and incredibly talked Alex into it as well. We toed the line with 13 other racers and had at it for a full 30 miles. The race to the singletrack was a bit more than the singlespeed (and my spindly legs) could keep up with so I ended up diving in toward the back of the pack. Yargo is plenty fast, though does not lack for turns, so I picked racers off one by one for the first lap. Toward the end of the lap, the singletrack opens up and I let another rider, Chad Salla, pass me to bridge up to the rider ahead of us. I couldn't hold on, but tried to keep him in sight.
I yo-yo'd back and forth like this with Chad for the the next lap and a half, but decided early in the 3rd lap that I wasn't going to let him get a chance to pass me at the end of the lap. I turned it up a notch and ended the race ahead, in a solid 6th place. Good enough for nationals, not that I'm in for that. Alex ended up double flatting on his first lap and was a bit disappointed, to say the least. Matt Harris ended up 12th in the sport class, just ahead of Dirty Mustache regular, Will Bradley.
